A market that didn't exist
On 21 January 2026, the UK government enabled self-employed workers to apply for DBS checks for the first time. The legislation opened a brand new commercial category overnight. Self Employed DBS was built to serve that category from day one, and Coconut was brought in to make sure it was visible from the moment the market came alive.
There was zero to work with at the start: no domain history, no backlinks, no existing rankings. The window of opportunity existed because no one had moved yet.
The custom eligibility check tool
Every SEO strategy needs a page worth ranking. For Self Employed DBS, that page was a bespoke WordPress plugin we designed and built from the ground up: the DBS eligibility check tool.
Rather than a static information page, we built an interactive tool that walks visitors through their eligibility in under 60 seconds. It asks the right questions, filters out uncertainty and routes qualified applicants directly into the application flow. The tool became the highest-converting page on the site.
Within weeks of launch, a contextual editorial feature on one of the UK's leading small business authority sites linked directly to the tool. That single quality backlink was enough to push it onto page one of Google, giving the site its strongest performing page within the first month.
The SEO strategy
The content architecture was built around how self-employed people actually search. We focused on specific professions and situations rather than broad category terms, developing a targeted network of landing pages optimised for the language workers use when they realise they need a DBS check.
Within ten weeks, over 20 keyword targets had reached page one of Google. Several pages settled into the top five results and the site's click-through rate reflects it.
Technical SEO was built in from the start. Schema markup, clean URL architecture, mobile-first performance and a reinforcing internal link network all came together before a single page was indexed. Domain Rating climbed from 0 to 8 over the period through quality links rather than volume.
The numbers
The growth across the 10-week period was significant. The site registered 11 impressions in the first weeks after launch. By the end of March that had grown to 1,359. By mid-April, with 19 days still left in the month, it had already reached 5,875: 4.3 times March's entire impression count. Organic search now accounts for 24% of all sessions, up from 4% at launch.
